ABOUT DR. TANYA VAN ASWEGEN

Dr. Tanya van Aswegen is a mental health consultant and an advocate for abuse survivors. She specializes in parent-child attachment, child development, and the impact of early adversity on mental health issues, including depression and PTSD. Dr. van Aswegen completed a joint PhD in Psychiatry at Stellenbosch University and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, funded by an NRF–Nuffic doctoral scholarship. Her dissertation was recognized as being among the top 20% in her field.

Her research combines psychology, neuroscience, and epigenetics, focusing on stress physiology and methylation patterns in stress-regulatory genes. Dr. van Aswegen has held research positions at KU Leuven, consulted for the WHO on neurodevelopment in early childhood, and served as a clinical coordinator for MindMaze, a Swiss neurotechnology company that utilizes virtual reality for neurological rehabilitation and human performance enhancement. She currently works as a clinician on clinical trials.

In addition to her research, Dr. van Aswegen is an award-winning science communicator, recognised as one of South Africa’s Top 10 Science Communicators. She has also published her work in leading peer-reviewed journals.
